Mothers online

Thursday October 02, 2008 @ Bangkok Post

Mothers online A network of mothers in the cyber world

SUPAWADEE INTHAWONG

Not long ago, a woman decide to leave her husband. She was three months pregnant. The subsequent depression and stress increased the risks of losing her unborn child from a threatened abortion. Not knowing what to do, she turned to the Internet and found a particular web board.

After reading a few discussions, she made a post about her condition, asking advice on giving birth without the father present. Replies were overwhelming. The moral support, compassion and suggestions from other cyber mothers gave her the strength and optimism to be a single parent.

Thanima Pichitnapakul, a 31-year-old single mother, became a loyal member of the online community of "mothers" on the Rakluke web site at http://www.raklukefamilygroup.com/, one of the oldest and most popular web sites for mothers and other family-minded people.

Today's Thanima is raising a son and running a spa business, but she also finds time to browse Rakluke every day for information on child-health and -rearing, as well as to trade new and used products with other mothers.

Other than the initial encounter with the board, another incident has also given Thanima a great impression of the web board community.

On the night her son was suffering from acute diarrhoea, and a visit from the doctor did not help, she turned to the web site.

She instantly received suggestions from the cyber mothers, who said that her son should keep drinking water. They also helped her find a hospital with a night-shift paediatrician and a few even offered to accompany her to the hospital.

"A mother asked if I wanted her to pick up us from home, as she knew my son and I did not have anyone else. I was extremely impressed and felt that I was not alone as there are people willing to help whenever there is a problem," said Thanima.

"These days, we arrange get-togethers from time to time. Some people are far away in Chiang Mai or even Hong Kong. They are everywhere. So, we chat on MSN, too."

Thanima eventually turned herself from a member of the web site to a counsellor for other single parents. She advises other members on situations such as the father's or mother's days when the children are supposed to bring their parents to school, when only one parent is available.

"I used to be just a receiver. Now I am capable of giving back too as I have become stronger. And because I am so impressed with the mothers' community on the web board, I want to give back and help other people," said the single parent.

Wilaipan Poompaka or "Mae Jang", 32, joined http://www.clinicrak.com/ during desperate times - she failed to get pregnant after four years of treatment. Wilaipan's friends recommended the web site, saying it might help if she talked to other mothers who have the same problem.

The members made numerous recommendations on the doctors, as well as self-help techniques in detail, such as the counting of the ovulatory phase, which helped Wilaipan save a lot of money.

''Experienced mothers on the web board were very jlunderstanding of my mental state as they had been in the same situation. They are ready to dispense advice. I was also consulting a doctor, but I could not get enough counselling. But, everyone on the web board was trying to help me as if we were sisters,'' said Wilaipan.

''We always keep in touch. If there is a problem with the child rearing, I can ask them any time. Now, my son is two years old and is about to enter school, so I can discuss to them about finding the right school. You can say the online network has helped me get pregnant and now helps me raise my child.''

As Thai families are no longer extended, child-rearing is solely the parents' responsibility, without much assistance from relatives.

Wilaipan is no exception. Her mother-in-law is too old to help raise her son, while her own mother lives in another province. ''During the first month, my baby began to develop colic. He kept crying for three months. I was a first-time mother who did not know what to do. I could not eat or sleep and lost 13kg. I also had an inverted nipple and had to feed my baby from one breast, while pumping the other,'' said Wilaipan.

''I asked for advice on www.clinicrak.com/ and www.raklukefamilygroup.com/. I received suggestions on the baby carrying techniques that effectively reduced my baby's crying. Other mothers who had the same problems also advised me and boosted my morale. I eventually was able to breastfeed my son until the age of one year and two months.

''When there were outbreaks of dengue fever and hand, foot and mouth disease, my son developed a few suspicious symptoms. So, I read web articles written by doctors and talked to other mothers to compare the symptoms, which gave me a lot of comfort. Today, we keep in touch and have had a couple of meetings alongwith our children,'' said Wilaipan.

She said the main reason she relies on the online network so much is because people respond quickly. A few people allow her to call them or chat online, and some are even happy to take a call in the middle of the night.

Wilaipan has been recommending the web sites to other friends, too.

''In this online community of mothers, all women are ready to help the other even when they do not know each other,'' said Wilaipan.

''Shang's Mother'' is a well-known user of Rakluke web board who regularly posts information on child rearing for other online mothers. Her posts are often the ones with the highest readership.

''Shang's Mother'' in the non-cyber world is Rattana Thanasarakij, a 41-year-old mother living in Vietnam with her family. Her older son attends a Vietnamese school, while the younger one is home-schooled by Rattana.

Before becoming a full-time home-maker, Rattana ran several businesses and helped raise several children in her large, extended family _ she has eight siblings. As an avid reader, Rattana has a lot to share with other mothers about child development and rearing.

''My husband said I am very much like a web master. I usually log on to the site at 6am and though the computer is on the whole day, I spend the day with my sons. I only turn off the computer at midnight when I go to bed,'' said Rattana.

''Parents typically send me about 30 to 40 emails a month, asking for advice or sharing their experiences. So, I have a lot of friends to talk to. I write a blog that people can read at their convenience.''

According to Rattana, the attractive aspect of Rakluke is that it has generated a strong online community of mothers. In addition, the web master allows total freedom in discussion, which may lead to strong arguments sometimes, but the readers are always encouraged to use their own judgement.

''When someone made an inappropriate post such as advertisement of a product or a school, the mothers who are monitoring the web inform the webmaster. So, the credibility of the web site is intact,'' said Rattana.

“Big fish” eye domestic retail market cautiously

 Photo from Internet
Secretary General of the Vietnam Retailers’ Association (VRA) Dinh Thi My Loan believes that big international retailers have not arrived in Vietnam because they are evaluating the market thoroughly to jump in at a suitable time.
Vietnam officially opened its retail market to foreigners a year and a half ago. Contrary to all predictions, big retail groups have not landed in Vietnam. For instance, Wal-Mart and Carefour have stayed outside Vietnam, even though analysts agree that Vietnam is a retail market with great potential.
According to Loan, there are many reasons. The global economic crisis has made foreign investors cautious about penetrating Vietnam’s retail market. Also, Vietnam’s market has always been listed among the top 10 most attractive emerging retail markets, but indices like purchasing power and infrastructure condition force foreign investors to wait for a good time to enter the market.
“This means that foreign investors are still taking no action and awaiting a reasonable moment to penetrate Vietnam’s market?” asked a Thoi bao Kinh te Vietnam journalist in a recent interview with Loan.
She responded that “No, they are not taking no action. They are learning and seeking to understand Vietnam.”
Loan believes that many foreign investors will join the market in the time to come, because Vietnam has one of the world’s most attractive and potential markets.
Over the last 1.5 years, Vietnam’s retail market has changed dramatically, especially in strong development of modern retailing modes. Besides supermarkets, which are now familiar to Vietnamese people, other modes of modern retailing such as shopping centres, shopping malls, specialized shops and online shopping have also developed rapidly.
Loan pointed out that, despite big difficulties during the global economic crisis, Vietnam’s retail industry still obtained the very encouraging growth rate of 16 percent, not counting price increases.
She explained that domestic retailers have been readying for fierce competition when foreign retailers arrive. Saigon Co-op Mart, for example, has been trying to expand its network, planning to set up retail points in the north. Meanwhile, northern retailers like Hapro and Citimart have also been expanding their networks southward.
Loan admitted that the shortage of suitable retail premises remains the biggest problem for domestic retailers. It is now very difficult for small enterprises to locate a space, because all of them have high prices.
Not only small enterprises, but even large leading retailers like Saigon Co-op, Hapro and Nguyen Kim, according to Loan, are facing such problems in locating retail spots.

Vietnam’s first private credit information center debuts

July 19, 2010, 8:16 PM (GMT+7)

HANOI – PCB Investment Joint Stock Co. on Friday launched Vietnam’s first private credit information center designed to facilitate access to credit information for the private sector in the country.
With the facility in service, people and private businesses can gain access to credit information at more than 20 commercial banks.
PCB was formed in 2007 by 11 Vietnamese commercial banks including Asia Commercial Bank, ABBank, VietinBank, Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), DongA, Techcombank, Vietcombank, Saigon Commercial Bank (SCB), Vietnam International Bank (VIB) and VPBank.
The company, which has total chartered capital of VND50 billion, is 70% owned by the 11 banks while their strategic Italian partner CRIF S.p.A holds a 20% stake under an agreement signed on the same day. To hold such as stake, CRIF has pledged to supply equipment and technology for PCB to provide international standard credit information for customers.
The deal between PCB and CRIF comes after nearly two years of negotiations and with the assistance of International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank.
PCB plans to sell the remaining 10% stake to another strategic partner.
The Government and the central bank earlier this year issued documents to build a legal framework for credit information service in Vietnam.
Vietnam has over 86 million people and 480,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) but only 5% of people and 30% of SMEs have credit transactions with banks due to lack of information.
“This is a low ratio while in Thailand and Malaysia it ranges from 70% to 80%,” said PCB chairwoman Le Thi Kim Nga.
Carlo Gherardi, chief executive officer of CRIF, said the credit information center was expected to give necessary information for individuals and SMEs and help banks better manage and prevent risks.
CRIF, established in 1988, has credit information centers in Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary.
With 51 commercial banks Vietnam will have a maximum of two such centers, excluding the Credit Information Center under the central bank, according to Government Decree 10.

National Brand: Interesting stories on Vietnam

Jul 16th, 2010

At a round table discussing on “Development of National Brand” sponsored by Tri Viet Education Research and Development Centre and Saigon Media in Ho Chi Minh City, experts and entrepreneurs, local and foreign, focused on relationship between economy-businesses, culture-history-human being, the role of mass media and public awareness, the State and concern parties.
Interesting stories
Mr. Luong Van Ly, Director General of DNL Company (HCMC) believed that like a person, a Nation has its own soul and characteristics to be respected and in relations with other nations. Development of national brand likes establishment of personality and the stories to be recounted. The problem is who will recount the stories.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nam, Director of FPT group recalled a story: FPT tried to sign a contract with a Japanese partner. The Japanese entrepreneur was a very difficult person. Mr. Nam invited the Japanese partner to Vietnam and brought him to Ha Long Bay. The Japanese guest was deeply impressed by natural landscapes, the images of buffalo and rice field. The hard-to-please businessman was fully convinced and signed the contract in place. He later decided to live and work in Vietnam.
According to Ms Ton Nu Thi Ninh, former Vice Chair of Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly, if a nation has a high sense of its value, it has made a big step in developing national brand. However, there must be also the recognition by the world. When the two things are assured, national brand of Vietnam can be lasting and developing.
National brand is the asset of the whole people and country, to develop national brand, the government must mobilize all social strata, businesses of famous brands, to contribute their parts to national brand. The State has a key role but not unique role, cannot control everything but needs the cooperation of the people, organizations and associations, with the consensus of the whole society. Development of national brand does not depend only on enterprises but also specific persons in the society such as a friendly pedicab driver, a charming boy selling tourist gifts, a hospitable shop keeper, all of them contributing the national brand.
Historian Duong Trung Quoc said that Vietnam itself is already a brand. How to maintain and develop the brand, it needs the role of the State, the government. National brand is not a natural product. It requires fuller research on how Vietnamese brand was established.
On his part, Mr. Phan Chanh Duong, lecturer of Fulbright program, said that national brand should be built on the pride of the people regarding their homeland. In other countries, national brands are founded on ordinary consumers’ goods, closed to daily life such as leathered shoes, briefcases, watches, garment.. of high quality recognized world-wide and images of businesses are closely connected with the national brand.
Misunderstanding on Vietnam be dismissed
The world lacks information on Vietnam. There are difficulties in calling for investments in Vietnam. Misunderstanding on Vietnam still exists. It is difficult to introduce Vietnam at round table talks. By visiting Vietnam, foreign partners can be convinced. Therefore, Vietnam must recount success stories to the world, the fight for national independence, the peaceful construction and the development into a modern industrialized economy.can be convinced. Therefore, Vietnam must recount success stories to the world, the fight for national independence, the peaceful construction and the development into a modern industrialized economy.
Mr. David Keen, Director of Keen Media Company, a successful consultant for Bhutan brand, said that outsiders could not understand Vietnam. It could be due to incorrect approach. Misunderstanding must be dismissed otherwise Vietnam would miss the opportunity.
Ms. Morvarid Kaykka, Design Bridge Company, said that the stories must be recounted correctly, if they are recounted differently with what tourists witness in place, it would be a disaster. She told a story of Mozambique, it was described to outside world as a country of poverty, diseases and unsafe country. Consequently, it failed to attract tourists, depriving the country of big profit from tourism, while Mozambique has wonderful beaches. She reminded that each country should promote its own values. For instances, Vietnam should promote its national slogan: Independence, Freedom, Happiness.

Vietnam Garment producers try to expand domestic distribution

Jul 6th, 2010

In the last year, domestic garment producers opened 220 retail shops that sell office-style garment products for men. It is expected that 80 more shops will be opened by the end of 2010.

Gaining market share with more shops

“Mattana” trademark of Nha Be Garment Company is leading the market in terms of its distribution development rate, with 100 new shops within one year. “Viet Long” brand of Viet Tien Company opened 30 new locations agents within six months. If counting the 500 shops bearing its name and the 22 shops with the “Sanciaro – Manhattan” trademark, Viet Tien Company is leading the market in terms of the widest distribution network.

An Phuoc Company is following the “sight effect” plan and has decided to open 10 new shops a year instead of 3-4. An Phuoc now has 79 retail shops.

Khanh Viet Company has opened four new retail shops to promote its “Khatoco” line and it plans to open 50 shops specializing in office-style fashion for men across Vietnam. “Viet Tay” brand was born in late 2009, but has five shops in HCM City and 10 more will be set up in surrounding districts.

Vietnamese garment producers are now dominating the men’s office fashion market with a wide distribution network covering street shops, supermarkets and shopping malls. There are a wide range of products, from those priced at 150,000 dong to shirts priced at one million dong.

Vietnam-made shirts now appear in high grade shopping malls, including Parkson, Vincom and Zen Plaza, side by side with imported garments, demonstrating the strong development of domestically-made products.

Each company has its own advantage

Vietnamese garment producers are confident in entering the high quality men’s clothing market. All companies say they have advantages of their own in making products and competing with other producers.

Tran Huu An, a senior executive of Khanh Viet Textile and Garment Company, noted that they can weave patterned fabric in accordance with specific designs. Khanh Viet has the financial capability to buy garment materials at good prices, they have a large distribution network, and they have staff who can ensure products arrive at the stories very quickly.

According to Le Mac Thuan, Deputy General Director of Nha Be Company, “Mattana” shirts are quite different from those made by other companies, because the shirts are made with Japanese technology, which is quite different from European or US technologies.

Services still not good

Most garment producers still come up short in service. Some shirts are not produce in many colours, while others do not have different sizes. Sales agents are now offering both low and high quality products and salespersons push consumers to buy low quality products in order to enjoy bigger profits.

A company may have hundreds of stores, but if people want to make an exchange, they must come to the shop at which they purchased it.

Most companies have made heavy investment in producing good products, but the money is not enough to build up brand names.

Dinh Tien Na, the officer in charge of developing “Sanciaro” of Viet Tien Company, explained: “High quality products are not everything. The development of a trademark still depends on the quality of service, from sales service, the image and design of retail shops, sales associates and the shop atmosphere.”

According to The Pathfinder consultancy firm, one Vietnamese person now spends 420,000 dong per year on fashion clothing. In 2010, urban residents will spend 1,400,000 dong annually, while rural dwellers will spend 140,000 dong. It is estimated that the fashion market for men is worth 8600 billion dong a year.

Vietnam an attractive market for retailers

Jul 2nd, 2010

Vietnam is the most attractive retail market in the world, according to the 2008 Global Retail Development Index conducted by international consulting firm A.T. Kearney. Retail sector is also listed as the industry with the highest growth rate (12 percent) in 2009. Turnover in retail market is even predicted to reach $85 billion in 2012.

According to statistics, the distribution system of the consumer’s goods includes nearly 9,000 markets nationwide. The modern retail system includes 70 commercial centres and shopping malls, over 400 supermarkets of all kinds and hundreds of convenient stores.

The number of domestic modern retail stores such as Hapro Mart, Saigon Co.op, Fivimart, Citymart, G7 Mart, etc. goes up more and more quickly, locating mainly in Hanoi and Hochiminh city, accounting for approximately 20 to 30 percent market shares in the modern retail system.

In spite of some remarkable growths, the market shares of the retail segment of Vietnam are still lower than that of many regional countries (such as China 51 percent, Thailand 34 percent, Singapore 90 percent, Malaysia 60 percent, etc.). The increasing number of foreign retailers in Vietnam is creating fierce competition to the domestic retailers.
There are currently five big foreign retailers operating in Vietnam, including wholesaler-Metro, general retailer-BigC, industrial commodities specialised-Parkson, both supermarkets and retail stores operator-Lotte, own brand name products seller-Luis Vuiton.

Those firms have entered into Vietnam’s main cities such as Hanoi, HCM City, Da Nang, Hai Phong, etc. through opening large scale supermarkets thus attracting customers in both wholesale and retail segments.

Is it possible to compete with foreign investors?

When joining WTO, Vietnam has committed to open the distribution sector from 1 January 2009. The domestic market then experienced the participations of foreign distributors, and the competition therefore has become severe.

The preparation of the local retail firms has not been thorough. Most domestic firms still use out-of-date business methods; the management capacity could not catch up with the modern trends and also being less sensitive to information.

In contrast, when entering into Vietnam market, foreign retailers have at hand the advantages that domestic retailers would find really difficult to compete, such as large amount of capital; abundant and diversified sources of commodities; management, marketing and advertising skills; business strategy; and advantages in cost and selling price control.

With the arrival of foreign retailers, market shares of domestic retail system will be shrunk. According to Dr Nguyen Van Minh (University of Commerce), with such speed of growth of foreign retailers, if the domestic retailers do not unite and initiate an appropriate competitive strategy, the distribution system in the cities will fall into hands of foreign corporations.

Thai goods quietly conquering Vietnam

Jul 12th, 2010

Thai goods have not flooded Vietnam’s market like Chinese goods have, but they have gradually increased their presence, becoming another threat to domestic production.

Statistics demonstrate that Thai imports to Vietnam are diversified and their volume has been increasing rapidly (see box). It is clear that Thai goods compete most fiercely in consumer goods markets, with processed foods, cosmetics, ready-made clothing and footwear.

Thai goods claim “above-average” market

According to Thailand Commercial Affairs Division in HCM City, Thai goods do not compete with Vietnamese products in the low-cost sector, but mainly compete as products with above-average prices.

Le Van Hung, Deputy Head of the Marketing Division of Acecook Vietnam, noted that Thai instant noodles are trying to attract Vietnamese consumers with unusual tastes. According to Hung, Thai instant noodles do not compete with Vietnam-made products priced at of 2,000-3,000 dong per box. Instead they appeal to the above-average market segment.

Mai Tan Dung, Business Director of Lan Hao Cosmetics Company, admitted that Thai products have nearly no rivals in hair care products with average and above-average prices. According to a My Hao Cosmetics Company survey, Thai cosmetics products are now available at small hairdressing salons and account for 80 percent of goods at shops specializing in cosmetics for hairdressers in Tan Binh, Kim Bien and Binh Tay markets.

According to Dung, Thai goods have sold well because prices are relatively ‘soft’, just 10-20 percent higher than Vietnamese products, and yet cheaper by 60-70 percent than German, American or French products

At Soai Kinh Lam cloth Market in HCM City, a Thai suit for women and children priced at 250,000 dong has been selling better than equivalent domestic garments selling for 100,000-150,000 dong.

Hue, a clothes wholesaler, acknowledged that Thai clothes now sell better than Chinese products, thanks to better materials.

Nguyen Thi Phuong Mai is the owner of A-T Children’s Fashion Shop in HCM City that specializes in Thai imports. She agreed that even though Thai clothes are 30 percent more expensive than Chinese products, Thai garments still sell better because of their higher quality.

The owner of Thao My Shop in HCM City complained that, in selling both Vietnam and Thai goods, the Vietnamese goods lack diversification.

The path of Thai goods

Vietnam is clearly a target market for Thai producers. According to distributors, besides goods imported through official channels, they are also crossing the land borders and being carried into Vietnam by travelers.

Nguyen Tung, the manager of the official distribution agent for Adda footwear in HCM City, noted that the volume of goods imported across the border gate is ten times bigger than imports through official channels. Footwear shops that sell Adda products mainly sell products imported across the border.

According to Nguyen Thi Phuong Mai, it is very easy to buy Thai products. Merchants can contact Thai companies via Internet, at trade fairs and through addresses on product packaging. When merchants order several thousands of products, Thai companies will ship products by air to Vietnamese merchants.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the import revenue of Thai goods in the first six months of 2010 reached $2.5 billion, an increase of 37.8 percent in comparison with the same period of 2009.

Meanwhile, according to the Thai General Department of Customs, Thai total export revenue to Vietnam in the first five months of 2010 was $2,099.3 million, an increase of 37 percent in comparison with 2009. Cosmetics export revenue was $25.9 million (a 34.2 percent increase), garment export revenue was $1.3 million (a 14.4 percent increase).

Where are the workers hiding?

Jul 14th, 2010

Vietnam does not lack labourers, but companies often complain that they cannot recruit enough workers to fulfill their needs.

Living and working near families, having a stable income and low expenses – all these factors have persuaded many to stay in their home provinces rather than head to big cities.

Rural areas benefit from this phenomenon, since many are trying to develop industries. Yet even firms in the provinces lament the lack of workers.

Hoa Phu Industrial Zone has attracted more than 10,000 workers, while the labour demand from garment, footwear and fine art companies there is still very big, especially when the second phase of the industrial zone opens. Co Chien and Binh Minh Industrial Zones also desperately need employees at present.

The labour shortage has hit businesses hard, because they cannot accept new orders or expand production.

Ty Xuan Company, for example, has been calling to recruit 3000-5000 workers over the last two years. Nguyen Viet Trung, Deputy Director of Ty Xuan Company, admitted that they have sought to find workers through different sources, but the number of those employed is equal to 1/3 of their total demand.

Le Thi Binh, another deputy director at the company, explained that they once recruited 9000 workers for the highest production peak, but now they have only 8000 workers. Meanwhile, the project needs another 35,000-40,000 labourers.

She added that the firm cannot dare to go ahead with the second phase of the project with this level of labour shortage.

Ty Xuan Company is not alone. The labour problem has become so serious that many meetings of businesses and provincial authorities have been held to discuss solutions. Still, no considerable improvement has been made.

Ho Thi Tham, Deputy Chair of the Vinh Long Pottery Association, remarked that pottery factories do not lack orders, but they need more workers. She noted that many pottery kilns are not operating because of the dearth in employees.

To cope with the shortage, Ty Xuan set up a workshop in Dong Thap province near worker homes, where shoe caps are made and then transferred to Vinh Long for completion. Ty Xuan knows that a Dong Thap workshop means higher expenses, but the company has no other choice.

Many other companies must do the same. Nguyen Minh Tue, Director of Vinh Tien Garment Company, previously decided to invest in a Vinh Long workshop. He could not imagine that a labour shortage would occur. “If we cannot find any other solutions, we must relocate the workshop to another location near labour sources,” he admitted.

If the labour supply is extensive, but businesses cannot recruit workers, wherein lies the fault?

Huynh Kim Hoang, Head of the Vinh Long Job Centre, reasoned that demand and supply still ‘cannot meet each other’. A lot of workers demand stable jobs, regular promotions and high salaries, but they do not have knowledge and experience.

Meanwhile, many enterprises set up overly-high requirements for employees. For example, a ticket seller is required to finish high school, speak English and possess computer skills, and yet it’s a job that a secondary school graduate can do.
